Trial Versiuon on Linux

Hey Guys!

I'm unfortunately still waiting to receive my official copy (living in Austria), but so I downloaded the trial versions.
I just tested in on Mandrake 9.2, my main Linux-System.
Sesame starts with no problems, but when trying to start the SDesigner, I get "Segmentation fault".

Does anyone know, what I could do to solve that problem?

greets, ProBase

Sesame was developed on Red Hat and tested briefly on Mandrake 8.2 and Suse. We are setting up a Mandrake box to check out your problem as we speak.

There are a few things you can do:
1. you can launch sdesigner standalone, instead of from inside sesame.
2. make sure that the directory where both files reside is in your path.
3. make sure permissions and ownerships (user and group) are okay for both the binaries and the application files.

In the meantime, we'll get a Mandrake system set up here and see what we can do.

Thanks for the info.

Hi!

Thanks for your quick reply!

1. The first thing was starting it as standalone from terminal, there i got the message ;o(

2. I just looked at it, and everything seems to be okay.

3. the same as above

I will look myself too, what could be wrong.

Thanks for your help!

We just ran a series of tests using Mandrake 8.2 and all was well. We did have to chown/chgrp to run as another user after untarring as root, but nothing major.

Are you getting the seg fault as soon as Designer tries to open?

Are you just using "sdesigner" as your command line, or are you using arguments?

Any clues would be helpful. Please keep us posted as to your progress.

I did untar the package as normal user to my home-dir

I just use "sdesigner" as command, nor parameters or arguments.

right after hitting "enter" the message appears, nothing else happens.

OK. We're going to see about getting ahold of Mandrake 9.2 and seeing if we get the segmentation fault. I'm assuming that you haven't recompiled your kernel or applied 36 assorted patches from 15 different people...?  Wink Wink Wink

BTW, have you tried any other Linux machines?

Well ProBase, I'm afraid we're not going to be able to help you with your problem yet.

Apparently, the Mandrake 9.2 installation has a little issue with the very common brand of CD-ROM drive (LG) installed in many Dell and Gateway computers. It's little issue is that it sends a command to the CD-ROM that instructs it to completely erase its firmware. There is a program available that is meant to flash the CD-ROM, but, unfortunately, once the CD-ROM has been destroyed in this manner, the computer can no longer find it to restore the firmware.

After rendering two CD-ROM drives permanently inoperable, before research revealed what was going on, we decided that installing this version of Mandrake was not a very good idea.

We have no idea what this particular version of Mandrake's problem is with SDesigner. At this point, we're afraid to continue trying to find out. We're running out of spare CD-ROM drives...  Angry

We're very sorry that we can't set up a test box with this platform for you at this time. We're going to try to find a way around the CD-ROM problem, but it may take a while. For obvious reasons, we have to be very careful!  Please let us know if you find out any more information about the SDesigner problem.  Sad

OK, we went out and bought a stack of CD-ROM drives from a different manufacturer and successfully installed Mandrake 9.2!   Grin

We do see your segmentation fault. We'll throw some debug at it and let you know what's going on as soon as we can.

Hhhhmmm, I just installed Redhat, so I could test it with that system. Unfortunately I killed all the linux data, with it the Sesame-Tarball, and now the download is disabled ;o(

We've gotten it narrowed down to a problem with fonts. The newer Linux distributions come with over a thousand fonts! In the process of fixing that, we also discovered a small issue with the font bookkeeping that we're going to take care of. We'll reenable the Linux download soon.

Linux Trial Version 1.0.1 is available for download. It should take care of the font problem. ProBase, we've tested it on Mandrake 9.2 and it runs fine for us. Let us know if you have any more difficulties.

I just ran it under Mandrake 9.2 and Redhat 9.B with no problems, thank you very much!

Unfortunately i still haven't received the original because the main post office (where the international imports first come to) don't want to deviler it, I first have to send them a copy of the VISA-Bill. They know, that there is the "Sesame Database Manager" in it, but they don't know that it's from Lantica, so I have to send them the papers first ;o(

I hope getting it next week.
