Still learning the ropes.  Got to where I want to format a field as money and another as a date field.  Does the trial version allow for this function?  I'm in the design/redesign mode, format tab, clicked on the field I want to format and highlighted money format but it says "not set".  What am I missing here?

You are looking at the Property Viewer. This displays current settings. The control panel above it is the Property Editor, where you can actually change settings. The instructions for doing this begin on page 86 of the User Guide.

I've followed the instructions from page 86 thru 90. I get a message when I click on close design tab  that says the current design has been changed but not commited to the database. I know I'm missing a step some where. Sorry for being such a dunce.

I went back and made sure I double clicked save layout design.  Then I went to the db in trial version and tested the elements to see if the format had been applied.  It had not.  The money field is just numbers and so is the date field.

Whenever you make changes, you need to save them. The Save Layout Design command is in the Commands panel near the top of the Control Panels area. Click once in the Commands panel to set the focus, then click Save Layout Design.

Kathie,

Another easy way to change a field type if you already created it  is in Sdesigner under manage a database manage fields.

Open your dsr in Sdesigner
Click Manage A database
Under the database your working on
Click Manage fields
In the box that opens click on the Action field
Click on change field type
Under field name select field
Click add to batch
When you have selected all fields you want to change
Click
Run batch.

Like Magic its done. Its that easy

Hope this might be of some help.  Smiley

Okay, I'm really getting frustrated here.  I did as you suggested with the "manage a database" etc.  and the format is not working.  My dsr file has two elements which need to be formatted for my reports to work.  One is Sale Price as a money field the other Sale date (in January 7, 2004 format)  I clicked on add transaction to batch after assigning the formats and then run batch.  I then went back to the db in trial version and tried adding data to the db.  The money field is still text numbers and the date is too.  What the heck am I doing worng??

I'm getting a little confused too.

Which of the following are you trying to do?
1. Change a Text field to be a Money field.
2. Change the way an element bound to a Money field displays the field value?
3. Both.

Are your changes working in Preview mode?

After making your changes, did you Reconcile to apply the changes to the db?

In Q&A to set a field as a date or money field I used design menu, customize menu, format value and then typed MC for the money field and D for the date and then set the way the date should appear in the db.  In Sesame I'm trying to set the money field so it appears as $123,456 and the date as January 7, 2004 format.   So to answer your question I guess I'm trying to do both.  Preview mode??  Not sure what that is.  I'm a realtor with a prospect database of 4700 records.  I do reports of current sales from my Q&A db.  I'm hoping to convert the db to Sesame mostly because of the printing restrictions of Q&A.

Open your dsr in Designer.
From the Design Menu tree, choose Application / Preview Application

This opens your design in Preview mode.  It will behave exactly like Sesame with a few minor exceptions.

Is your data correctly formatted in Preview mode?

In preview mode/add data the money and the date are correctly formatted.  Now I'm REALLY confused. <G>

Oops the date entered as 1/7/04 returns January 7, 1704

Okay, then you need to Reconcile the changes to the db. The db doesn't know that you changed things in the dsr until you Reconcile. See page 131 of the User Guide.

BTW, 1/7/04 does not return Jan 7, 1704 but 1704 does. I think you may have been caught by the bug that makes the / on the numeric keypad not work.

Thanks Erika, I will watch closely to see is that is happening.

In creating reports I've read all the info and followed it correctly I think.  Created a report and saved it etc.  What I didn't notice at the beginning was a pop up that asked if I wanted to replace the current file name.dsr?  with a yes or no button choice.  I hit yes and now have discoverd that it wiped out my form, db, the works. I've recreated my form and db and again went to Application  utilities/redesign current application and am sitll getting that same pop up.  Where did I goof?
