Printing Qa4 to an Epson C82 (ink jet)

Is this possible? The vanilla driver is a no go. I have downloaded and installed all the new printers. I think I remember seeing a driver modification somewhere, but I can't find it.
I'm running Windows XP

John, I believe that printer is a windows only & will not print to dos, check your manual.
Also try searching the back issues of Quickanswer(.com) for windows printer problems in Q&A, I remember some articles relating to that.

I can print a dos text file with the print command.

The printer is connected by wireless network, and is a USB printer to complicate things further. It is my default printer.

USB is  the problem here.   Q&A Dos versions cannot connect to a local USB printer with Win9x.

I can think of three possible options:

1.  On NT systems (NT/2K/XP) you can use the "net use" command with the persistent switch set like this:

Net Use LPT1 \\MachineName\870Cse /Persistent:yes

The printer on the machine must be set up to be shared.  Actually you need to do this to Capture Q&A outputs on these NT systems.

=============
2.  Another option for WIN9x systems is to put the USB printer on another machine in a network.  Share that printer.  Now the other machines can use that printer, and Capture the LPT/COM port from Q&A

===============
3.  Final option is to see if you can get a parallel port cable for the printer instead.  Some have multiple port types available, I am not familiar with your Epson C82 printer.

Ok I give up, where do you enter:
Net Use LPT1 \\MachineName\870Cse /Persistent:yes
?

I can't even remember where to capture a Port.

XP is the system.

Go to a Command Prompt.

If you type NET VIEW you will be able to see what resources are available.  You will be able to see the MachineName and the Computer Description.  It will be prefaced with two backslashes like: "\\MachineName                                    .            Computer Description."

If you then type NET VIEW \\MachineName then you will see a listing of the shared resources on that machine.  Look under the column labeled "Type" for "Print" to identify the correct name for the printer to be captured.

Now you have the information you need to type
Net Use LPT1 \\MachineName\PrinterName /Persistent:yes

Once it has been entered, you should not need to do that again.  You can see what the current settings are at any time by going to the Command Prompt and typing NET USE.

XP does not have Capture like you may know from WIN9x.  Doing the NET USE will do the Capture for you.  Remember that Q&A has LPT1,LPT2, LPT3, COM1, and COM2 as ports.  If you are using any of these then you must enter a separate NET USE line for each of them.

It may also be helpful to modify the displayed Name (Not the Shared Name) of the Computer to show the port it captures.  Example: "870Cse" becomes "870Cse (LPT1)"

You can also "pipe" the NET USE results to a file and parse the file to make decisions about commands and/or change the network settings on the fly.  But that is another discussion all its own.  Not for here today.

Thanks! That cured two of the three machines! They print perfectly!
Unfortunately, the one machine that it didn't work on is the one I need the most Roll Eyes
That's the one with a direct LPT3 cable connection to the printer. I wonder if I made a mistake with the net use command, but it won't let me change it, something like "already in use" comes up. How do you cancel the "Net Use" Command? So I can try again?

Yes, I remember "piping" I'm old enough to have used DOS quite a bit.

Try this:
NET USE LPT1 /DELETE /YES
or
NET USE \\MachineName\PrinterName /DELETE /YES

What do you mean by:
Quote:
direct LPT3 cable connection to the printer.
Do you have a physical LPT3 on your machine?  If Yes, that should be connected as a Windows printer first.  Then that printer can be used with a NET USE (Capture) to LPT3.

You can have multiple connections to the same resource.
This is OK:
NET USE LPT1 \\MachineName\PrinterName
NET USE LPT3 \\MachineName\PrinterName

To print in Landscape, just make a Windows printer default to Landscape mode.  And use that printer to capture the Landscape LPT from Q&A

Also remember to ues the PERSISTENT switch so you don't have to do this every time you start your system.

Is the Accounting program also a DOS program?  If Yes, it is going to use the same Captures that you set for Q&A.   LPT1 will be the same printer for both programs.....  LPTx will be the same printer for both programs.........

If it is a Windows program, then the Net Use commands should not be having any effect.  Have you possibly changed the Default Printer?  Does your accounting program have default printers set up itself, like QuickBooks?  Have you mistakenly changed or deleted a printer that was defined there?

The system has three computers, on a wireless network.
One computer has a direct LPT3 cable connection to an Epson Stylus C82 One of the others has a Usb Connection to the same Model printer, and one computer has no connections except through the network.

I have resolved the issue as follows. I found that none of the computers were using LPT2, so I constructed a net Use command on each computer to direct the printout to the USB printer, using net use lpt2 ..... Then I told QA4 to print to Epson Stylus ... on Lpt2
on each machine. It works on all machines!

Thanks for your help!

Most Ink Jet Printers emulate the HP deskjet. I would set the QA printer driver to run the "HP deskjet" driver and then try to do the print job.
