Error opening database

I'm getting an error when trying to open a database I've been working on:

Database sample.db failed to open
Error: failure while loading database sample.db
Database does not exist.

However, I'm able to open this in Designer (the dsr file).  I get the same error when trying to reconcile to sample.db.  I can save it as a new application, but I'm concerned about this happening again.

I'm running Sesame on a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, Windows XP SP1

First go in Windows explorer and make certain that Sample.db and Sample.dat exist in the default directory which is c:\sesame\data . If they are not there,  find out the exact directory where Sample.db and sample.dat are. If the files are there where you expected them to be, they might have been locked and for that you might need to unlock by either using Sunlock utility or going into Server Administration.
