I have set up my computer as the server for the Sesame program. I will be using Sesame as will two of my co-workers.

Is there a proper way to close the server at the end of the day or am I supposed to leave my computer running at all times?

Thanks!

Can someone also add some info to install Sesame as a Service in Windows so a login is not required?

I have tried it with Fire Daemon and it seemed to work fine, but I was hoping I didnt have to rely on a 3rd party solution for system running xp Pro.

Thanks,

While reading the Q&A Translation Guide, I noticed that there is a default User ID and Pasword.

I used this to shut down the server.

Is that the correct procedure?

What if there is a power surge while the system is being updated? Will the information be lost?

Jenni,

I think you are using the correct procedure to shut down the server.

Be sure to buy a good Backup Battery with Serge protector built in and plug your computer into it. It will help protect your data from power outages.

These are called UPS (un-interuptable power supply) and can be purchased at all computers stores, and internet.

It is the correct way if you went through the Server Administration on a Client and shut down that way. The Emergency Shutdown button on the server is not the correct way to shut down the server.

Unless the server is actively writing to the application file, a sudden shutdown due to power outage is unlikely to do much harm. You will probably just have to "unlock" your application files. The server is only writing to the files when users are making changes. So a sudden outage in the middle of the night is unlikely to be a problem.

There is no special need on the server's part to be shutdown nightly or to remain up continuously. Do whichever makes sense to your operation.

Is it possible that I have caused any damage (there are no active files in Sesame at this point) to Sesame since I simply shut down my computer before?

Thanks for your help!

You wouldn't have damaged Sesame, but any applications you had open at the time may fail to open and need to be unlocked.

Which leads to another question. How do you unlock an application?

You can use the sunlock utility provided by lantica

The syntax from a command line is sunlock database name

I have a shortcut set to run like this

C:\Sesame\Utilities\Lantica\sunlock.exe c:\sesame\data\databasenamehere.db

Or you can unlock it in server administration. See pg 421-427 in User Guide
