Hi

I have the following application structure in FileMaker Pro V6

Database 1: Transactions - Fields: Primary key = Transactions_ID with subform linked to Transactions_items - 1 to Many
Primary key = Clients_ID with subform linked to Clients - 1 to 1
Other ordinary fields such as Order_number, Delivery_date etc.

Database 2: Transactions_items - Fields: Secondary key = Transactions_ID.
Primary key = Products_ID with subform linked to Products - 1 to Many
Other ordinary fields such as Quantity etc.

Database 3: Clients - Fields: Secondary key = Clients_ID
Other ordinary fields such as Name, Address, Contact, etc.

Database 4: Products - Fields: Secondary key = Products_ID.
Other ordinary fields such as Description, Price etc.

I read in the documentation about hierarchical import for a main form and it's subform for "natural Link" and I think I understand how it works with a 1 to many set up. Is it possible to apply the same principle but for a slightly more complex structure like this one above?

Jondolar,

You can probably set up a simliar relationship in Sesame. The process of moving four interconnected databases from one application to another is not going to happen with a single hierarchical import. Your best bet is probably to bring them in one at a time with relational links, then use the process described in other threads to convert those relationships that are appropriate into natural links.

Erika

Can you point me to those "other threads". I tried a search with Natural links, relationship etc. with no success.

Thanks

Serge

Serge,

Try this link. See the last post by Hammer (Erika).
http://www.lantica.com/Forum2/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=archived;action=display...

I think there should be a step 4 1/2, which would read something like this:

4.5) Remove all the records before re-importing the data.

Otherwise, you're likely to end up with duplicate parent form data.

Another word of caution - you should also read this thread:

Hi Carl
Thanks for the pointers.

My situation is somewhat different. I start with fresh, empty Sesame databases and I want to use natural link. Doing a simple, 2 files hierarchical import seems pretty simple. But if you have in another database manager such as FileMaker Pro say 3 files.

The Parent file Orders (file 1) has Client_id linked to Client_id in a child file named ClentInfo (file 2).
The parent file Orders (file 1) also has Product_id linked to Product_id in a child file named LineItems (file 3).

Now, I can do a hierchical import of Orders and ClientInfo from FileMaker Pro in Sesame. What do I do with Oders and LineItems? do I have to erase all records in Sesame Orders Database and reimport Orders from FileMaker Pro along with LineItems?

In short this is the best I can do to describe the situation. I hope it's clear.

Any Idea?

TIA

Serge

Well, the way I did it, was to import my data into a relational Sesame subform first. And then followed the instrucions that Erika posted to make it naturally linked.

I was thinking along the same lines as Erika's suggestion: Quote:
Your best bet is probably to bring them in one at a time with relational links, then use the process described in other threads to convert those relationships that are appropriate into natural links.
