I'm following the book, as far as I can see, word for word, but so far, when I go to designer, and try to load the search criteria, it doesn't show up.

Go into Preview mode.
Create and save your Search there.
Exit Preview to return to Designer.
You can now attach the Spec.

I've moved away from work, so I don't have direct access to the program.
I tried working in preview mode yestereday too, and didn't get it to work either.
I was hoping there was a misprint in the book.
I'll go back and work some more in preview mode today. I must be doing something wrong.
