designer lockup

I'm trying to edit one particular application, and it's locking up Designer. It gets as far as the little loading window, but the bar in the window doesn't move even after ten minutes.
All the others work fine, just this one.
It's not 'locked' I checked, and the application opens flawlessly in Sesame.

scratch that, I just got an 'assertion' failure
IN SESAME

hoardheap.h line 398

sizeclass <SIZE_CLASSES

Used control alt delete to shut down the program. Nothing else was working.
I have rebooted after I got a server failure as well.
Now the application fails to open, on any machine in the system, including the serving machine.
It's still not locked...
Other apps still fine

Hello Bob,

Could you send me the DB and DAT files?
Also where did it crash in Sesame? On load or after a specific action?

Any reconciles or changes to the DB structure yesterday?
Were you running Client Server yesterday?
Was Sesame Server shut down last night? If so was it shut down from a client?

I need your email Ray
I tried to change the form size, colour and font from a client yesterday, but it the rec. did not work across the network. The client machine showed the changes, but not the serving machine.
I went to the serving machine, and tried to make those changes there, but Designer would not open the App. on that machine. The App still openned after, just no changes, in Sesame itself.
None of the machines will open the app this morning.
After the crashes this morning, I was getting the too many client warning, when I had none open, this is when I rebooted all the machines.
The server was shut down from a client machine last night, without issue.

Bob,

Could you also send me the log file from both the Server computer and from the Client computer where you did the redesign? The log will be found in the C:\Sesame directory on each machine and will be named s_log0000.log

Rename them to be Server_s_log0000.log and Client_s_log0000.log

Bob,

Is there any possibility that the DB file was in use when you went to reconcile to it?
Any Emergency Shutdowns recently when people may have had an application open?
Any unlocking of applications when they may have been in use by the server or another person at that time?
Any chance that two different sessions of designer had the same DSR file open at the same time?

I did get a warning that the application was in use when I tried to reconcile earlier in that day. I had the other client shut down the application, then tried again. It reconciled only to the client machine I was using.
The application was used on the serving machine for several hours after that, without problems.

I am the only one working with designer right now. There have been no emergency shutdowns. (My staff are afraid of it).
We now have an API backup for power failures.
I  doubt that I would have tried to unlock without checking the other machines first, I have read the warning every time I go into the admin section.

Bob,

Once the other client closed out the application were you able to reconcile right away or did you have to unlock the application first?

Your client could see the changes to the DB file but no other client could? Unless you were in a different DB file or not connected to the server this is unheard of. Which computer is this client, the one that could see the changes to the DB, located on?

How do you start Sesame Designer? If it is from the icon, what is the target for your icon and what is the start in directory?

I don't remember having to unlock the application first. Seems to me it went right through.
I have been trying to figure out why it didn't reconcile myself, doesn't make any sense at all, I can certainly see where you're comming from.
The client machine that I am working from, is on a wireless network, about twenty feet from the server.
"C:\Sesame\Data\sdesigner.exe -client Front"
is a direct copy from the icon on this machine
The serving machine uses the same string, minus the
-client

Is it possible that if the reconcilliation could not be done, that it might default to another copy of the file somewhere on this machine?

Getting scared now, the backup is several days old.... Cry Cry

nope. The only times I have seen a successful reconcile but no client showed the changes what happened was the Server had the DB file loaded into memory and somehow Designer was able to reconcile it. If you bring up Sesame Standalone at that point and load the DB file you would see the changes but any client on the server would not be able to.

If you ever run into this situation again, I hope no one ever does, where the clients on the server will not show the changes. One of the things you can do to possibly save yourself is to make a backup of the application from one of the clients. I say possibly because in my testing it works most of the time but I am sure there is going to be a few cases where this will not work.

The safest thing to do before any reconcile is to make a backup of the DB file. It only takes a few minutes and can save you a lot of time, trouble and headaches.

I know you do not want to hear this but you are going to have to revert to it.

Hard lesson to learn I guess, I will institute a 5 day rolling backup system as a result of this.
Backups I am using, are Xcopied, by batch file to Zip disk.
