Identifying Connected Clients

Every now and then, when I check the connected clients through the server admin interface, some clients appear as an IP address instead of their computer name.

Is there any reason for this ?  It makes it difficult to determine who they are.

All of our computers are assigned names.

Thanks,

Louis

Some of the MS operating systems do not comply with TCP/IP standards for name services lookups. Nor are they consistent from one version of windows to another.

Internally, Sesame uses the IP address. But when asked to, we lookup the name by asking the OS. If it cannot answer we pass the IP number through instead. Ray might know which of the OSs are more problematic.

Mark:

Thanks for the info.  FYI - we only use XP.

Hello Louis,

Some XP Boxes will hand the name back to us, others will not, some will hand it back to us only if the Sesame server is running on computers it 'likes', but not to others.  I'm not sure what the difference between them all is but my guess is it has something to do with security.

If you have ever looked at your Server Log you will see an error with a number 510562 which says "Cannot Collect Client Information". That is the error that is written to the log file when the computer does not give us back it's name.

Does this mean we would be wise to use static IP for Servers hosting Sesame?

Nothing said above denotes that conclusion - but the conclusion is valid none-the-less.  Sesame, nor name services, care if you use static or dynamic IP assignment. But, Sesame will care very much, if your IP address changes while Sesame is connected. Make sure that your router/DHCP server is set to assign a dynamic address that will not "timeout" or "refresh" in any way.
