@msgbox sound

Hi -

Is there a way to "disable" (on occasion)  the sound that accompanies @msgbox?

In most cases, the message box, itself, is sufficient to get the user's attention and I find the sound very irritating.

I would still like it "available" for those occasions when I might need it ... if I think the user might be "looking away."

If it is not currently available, I would appreciate your considering modifying the command for a future release.

Thanks!

Hello Spencer,

If you find the sound irritating why not change it to a sound that is more pleasant?

On Windows XP
Open Control Panel
Open Sounds and Audio Devices
Click the Sounds tab
Under program events is one called "Critical Stop"
Change what .wav file it plays to one that you like.

Ray -

Bless you child!

See, that's why I asked.  Smiley

Honestly, I didn't realize you were just "tying in" to an existing Windows feature (and even if I had, I didn't realize which one).

In any event, that solves my problem AND gives me a bonus of a little more flexibility than I realized I had.

Now, I can go back to using @msgbox --- instead of trying to force @msg to be a little easier to notice.

One last point though.  I am assuming that now every Windows Program that utilizes Critical Stop will now be changed to my "new" sound.  While that is not a major issue, there are times when the "old" critical stop sound was appropriate.

Is it not possible for the user to be able to associate a sound with @masgbox that would not affect the generic Windows sounds?

Thanks!

Yes every program that runs the Critical Stop sound will play your new sound.

Currently... No. and I have no idea if it is possible to implement in the future or not.

Hi Ray -

When you say that you have no idea whether it is possible to implement in the future, may I assume that you will refer it for consideration?

Thanks!

There is another side to this coin. Windows (and Linux) desktop "sound schemes" and the settings are end user adjustable. If we were to ignore those settings we would be poor desktop citizens.

I turn off all sound on all of my computers. If a program (or application developed by a consultant) ignored my settings...

Or worse, if a department or organization has standardized on sound settings (for example - to prevent folk in one cubicle from bothering others nearby) and Sesame did not abide by those settings, either because Lantica built it otherwise, or because a consultant overrode the user's settings) ...

Mark -

I'm not sure that I fully understand your comments; however, whether I do or not, I really don't see that it is relevant to what I am asking for.

With or with Windows default sounds, I can associate any wave sound I want with a Sesame programmed feature.  For example, because I didn't like the Critical Stop sound (even if I didn't know that's what it was), I created a wave file with an appropriate message to be played instead of @msgbox.

But since @msgbox is a very useful feature, I would like to be able to use it in a manner that it works best for me.

So, no matter what a developer does, I can create and play any sounds I want on my computer.  All I am asking is to be able to associate a sound of MY chosing SPECIFICALLY with the @msgbox command.

Moreover, when I look in the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties of my Control Panel, I see many options for controlling sound (IN ADDITION TO THE WINDOWS SOUNDS) from programs such as ActiveHome and Quicken (among others) and even from specific Windows Applications, such as Net Meeting, Phone Dialer, Windows Explorer and Windows Messenger (among others).

So I cannot see where what I am asking for would be "violating" any ethical or other standards within the computer industry.

Perhaps, I am missing something, but I simply fail to see it at this point.

Thank you.

We'll put it on the list of things to consider.

Thank you, Erika.

That's all I was asking.
