What I did today

I did some minor work on the the Quick Start menu system. For those of you who didn't see this at the last user's conference, the Quick Start menu is a window with some of the most used commands in it. It follows along with user interaction so that the choices are appropriate to the mode you are in. It can be popped up at any time (unless disabled by programming or the sesame.ini file), and can be dismissed easily. If it gets behind anything else, Sesame will make some effort to bring it to the top, or if you hit the "Quick Start" button it will pop back to the top.

When Sesame first starts up:
==================
Use an Existing Application
Build a New Application
Exit

Once an application has been selected and opened:
===============================
Enter Data *
Search *
Redesign Current Application
Close Current Application
Exit

*note: followed by selecting a form from a popup list of forms

Add Data Mode:
==========
Advance Record
Retreat Record
Delete Record
Exit Add Data Mode

Search Mode:
========
Search Using This Search Spec
Clear This Search Spec
Exit Search Mode

Update Mode:
=========
Advance Record
Retreat Record
Delete Record
Run a Report *
Return to Search Spec
Exit Update Mode

* note: followed by selecting a report from a popup list of reports

These seemed to be the obvious choices of the absolutely most used commands. We really want to keep this simple and brief - commands absolute beginners would recognize. But, if there is anything you think we really need to add here - please suggest it.

To give you some idea what I'm talking about, here is the Linux version in various sequential modes:

The button is here (once you click on it it turns the same color as the other menu items):

Here is the Quick Start menu before an application has been selected:

I've selected an application:

In Add Mode:

In Search Mode:

In Update Mode:

One of the things I did today was add shortcuts to the buttons so they can be selected with the alt key. The shortcut letter is underlined in the label - but that does not appear in the screenshots above (didn't bring latest home with me tonight). You may also notice that the Linux version still has the 1.0 banner screen. Gotta remember to take care of that in the morning.

What about if you are in add or update mode with a subform - is there a button for Advance/Retreat Main Record?

The Advance Record button always advances the record with focus (whether subform or main). I may change that.

That looks awesome!

I know the correct thing for me to do is to just say Thank You for whatever tools you offer us users.(THANK YOU) The unfortunate reality is we always want more or some kind of twist on it. I feel guilty asking the next to questions, but….

Will the TranslationTable commands work with these Quick Start menus also?
Will we have the ability to omit specific Quick Start menu buttons?

Thanks

Yes.

No (at least not yet). But you can build your own pop-up windows with whatever buttons you like.

You're welcome.

It is a feature in Sesame 2.0, which has not been released yet. This thread is a part of a peek into the development process. Once you have 2.0, the Quick Start menu is available from the pulldown menubar of Sesame Runtime (as seen here):
