Client/Server requires an IP address?

Before I say anything else, let me first say that my understanding of this whole issue is very jumbled and vague.  So I may not be clear in what I'm asking and I'll probably look like a fool, but here goes....

Over the past few weeks we've been having work done with our firewall and internet connectivity in general.  I've noticed that when my firewall goes down, so does Sesame server.  Or maybe it's the client; I'm not sure because I have both running on the server.  In any case, connection between the two is lost.

The only other program that this happens to is the software that monitors my APC UPS.  My network guy says it's because it needs an IP address to run, and when the firewall goes down, that is lost.

Is this what's happening to Sesame, or could it be something completely different?

Welcome to the club!

Oh and by the way every time someone looks like a fool I seem to learn something, so thanks for asking the question.

Likely.

Is it when the firewall comes up or when the firewall is turned off?

This I do not know.  I'll try testing it this weekend.

If it is when the firewall comes up it could be that the firewall is blocking the ports that Sesame is using. This will cause the clients to lose the connection to the server and freeze. The Server will still be running but you can not connect clients to it unless they are inside the firewall(ie: on the same computer)

How can I determine which ports these would be, so that I can configure the firewall not to block them?

By default the ports are 20000 and 20001. If you have specified other ports you can tell by looking at the connection box in the Sesame Server. If it says something like "Server:20002:20003" then the last two numbers are your port numbers.

What is your firewall environment?

Do you have a hardware firewalls at any points in the network?
Do you have software firewall on each station and the server?
If software, what product and version?
What is the status of any built in Windows firewalls?

Do you have static or dynamic IP addresses?
