[Fixed] ODBC driver Sesame failed with version 2.0

Fixed: ODBC Driver created for v2.

I have upgrade to version 2.0.
Now i have a problem with the ODBC driver with Crystal Reports.
I can view the field at the database.
When i will retrieve data from the database i get the error: "Query Engine Error: ‘42500:[Lantica, Inc][Sesame ODBC driver][ISAM]Unknown field type found. Type: 19’"

What can be the problem?

The problem is that the V1 ODBC driver won't talk to a V2 database. We're still trying to decide whether to provide an ODBC driver for V2 as ODBC is very clumsy as a technology and there are only about five people using the V1 driver.

Is the ODBC driver very important to you?

( @Bob Hansen - Yes, we know you love ODBC. Your vote has been registered.  Smiley )

Yes it's very important we have about 25 crystal reports for daily use.

OK. We're looking into what we need to do to update the driver. We'll let you know.

Thanks for the proxy vote, Erika.

Although important, I did find that the inability to use it with subforms reduced its capability tremendously, for my needs.

I actually had a request last week to use ACT! with Sesame and ODBC for data sharing.  But it looks like we will be doing import/export instead.  Hmmm, didn't you once do a beta2 demo using SQL data retrievals?  I seem to recall that, but have forgotten the technique.  That may be an alternative to ODBC.

That was using Sesame to affect mySQL records, not the other way around. The Sesame ODBC driver is read only.

Hello Bob,

The ODBC link in 1.X works with subforms. The Parent Record ID's and the Child Record ID's are grabbed by the driver and all that needs to be created is a Left Outer Join To include all Parent Records and then only the children parented to the record, assuming the subform is a natural link, and remove the Inner Join on _RECORDID_ if MSQuery creates it for you. The Parent/Child join is not automatic as it would differ between relational and natural linking methods.

Alex,

The 2.0 Driver is now available under the same download account you used to download the Sesame 2.0 upgrade. The install will replace your 1.x driver. Let us know how it works for you.

I have also downloaded the ODBC for Version 2.0.  Not set it up yet, but curious if it can be used with Version 1x databases, or do I need both if still have both versions supported on same system?

Both ODBC drivers can not be installed on the same system as the new sesodbc.dll overwrites the old one.

Glad you mentioned that before I installed version 2.

So it is more important to answer the question ..... can Version 2 ODBC be used on Version 1 Sesame files?

If not, then will need to create code to temp rename the dll files for each version and rename them back.

Or, can I rename one of the dll files before I define the ODBC connections?  So I can have a Version1 and Version2 ODBC definition, each using a dll with a different name?

The Version 2 ODBC driver can only correctly connect to a Sesame Version 2 server, so the files would be converted when you tried to open them with ODBC.

Renaming them and then swapping them back and forth would be your best bet or rerunning the setup when you need to switch back and forth.

You can not rename one of the dll files before you define the ODBC connections, It won't work.

Thanks Ray.  Some programming will be needed.  Will need to copy each versions dll to sesodbcVx.dll then rename the correct one to the sesodbc.dll name.

Can I use the @Version function to tell Version1x from Version2x?  Hmm, that won't help because the change will need to be based on which database is being worked with from the other application.  Looks like a batch file will be needed when the application using ODBC is opened.

Thanks again.
