[Solved] can't unlock application
Oct 8th, 2007 at 2:14am
Print Post Print Post
I had to use task manager to get out of a job and I haven't been able to unlock it.
Running single user on version 2.0.3. I even tried downing the computer and after a reboot and another unlock it still wasn't unlocked.
What next ?

I have also run into a number of applications that I could not initially unlock in 2.0.3

And if I tried to move to another folder, or to rename, I could not do.
I could not unlock with sunlock after trying admin tools.
I did find that only the DB file was locked, not the DAT file.

I was the only user, using Designer as standalone on the Sesame Server box.  Saving from DSR as new application to DB but then finding the DB locked.

It looks like it only "took time", because after a half hour or so, I was able to access the locked files.  Is there some system value that needs to be set to unlock immediately after use?

Harley,

See if the files you are trying to unlock are read only. If they are, remove the read only flag before unlocking them.

If Sdesigner was still saving the DB when you tried to open it that could cause this to happen. Sesame files do not magically unlock after a certain period of time or anything like that.

Not the case Ray.  The locked files were definitely being written to.  Some were hours old.  And yes, after some time, they mysteriously became unlocked.  There is no doubt about the amount of time I lost because I could not use these files.

Because of all the records in the Designer, it is now taking almost 10 minutes to Save Changes on layout, or Reconcile, or Create a New Application.  I will probably remove all records in the next few iterations, but need good record samples to do Preview.

The only programs that can clear a Sesame Lock are Sesame, Sdesigner and Sunlock. So one of them must have been used to clear the lock, or one of them had the files locked which cleared it when closed. The files can not be unlocked by any other means, even the data fairy can not unlock Sesame files.

Do you have DATABASE RETENTION: turned on in your Sesame INI file? If you do then as soon as you load an application that application will stay loaded and locked until Sesame Server is shut down or Sesame is shut down if you are Standalone. That can cause you to not be able to reconcile an application that you had just reconciled and tested, even if no clients actively have the file open, but the server is still running.

Yes, DATABASE RETENTION: ON

I am sure I never set this, but the value came out when I dumped out a Sesame.ini file.  So, I suppose this is the default.  I will have to read up on this, and make sure I know if I want it ON/OFF.

From User Guide, page 548:
Quote:
DATABASE RETENTION: Database retention determines if an application remains
loaded on the server even after there are no more clients accessing that application.
This allows an administrator to preload a set of databases, making subsequent loading
unneeded, both for normal use and for X-Commands. Valid settings are ON and OFF.
ON is the same as using the –keep startup switch.
Example: DATABASE RETENTION: ON
Default: OFF

Hmm, shows default = OFF, so I must have changed it.  And now reading this again, it would seem that I do  want the value of ON for faster loading.  And it may also explain some of the "unknown" applications that I mentioned seeing on Sesame Server in another posting.  I think the Server/Client/Standalone operations and settings are starting to come together now.

So many new tools with the INI capabilities, hard to remember them all, and since you look at them once, make the INI setting, it is easy to forget they exist.  They are not like programming functions that are used every day.  Thanks for reminding me about that one setting.  Will need to keep looking at loaded applications.

Since I rename development versions File1, File2, File3, etc. and they all have the same Application name, that is why I may see the same application name in the Server list, they are the names of File1, and File2, still there after I have closed them, and why they are locked.  So when they "mysteriously" unlocked later, it was probably because as Admin, I went in and removed the applications.  Did not realized this was happening in Standalone mode, as well as Server/Client.

Thanks again.....guess we can mark this one SOLVED from my perspective, but this is not my original thread.  But I am satisfied.

Speaking of the original thread: How are you, Harley? Were those files read-only?

I finally got to the internet again during my travels and am happy to say the files magically unlocked much as Bob's did. The files were not read only and I don't know what really happened but all is fine now and it hasn't happened again.

Thanks,
Harley

Now we have locked databases that magically unlock themselves after a while, can we now have programming errors that fix themselves if you go and make a cup of tea?

Well if we have magically unlocking applications, then I'll gladly write the FixCodeWhileIGetTea function and implement it into the Programming Editor.

Actually that's just a member function of the class RayTheReaper and is most commonly called from the AHItsBrokenRayMakeItWork function.

I'm not just a function  Grin

The magic occured when I clicked on the unlock button. I couldn't get my debug program button to work though. The original problem must have been I was blind and couldn't select the correct program to unlock. I can't think of any other reason for the failure.
