I presently use Sesame’s web functions with Sbasic to gather data and images from web sites and place my user at  specific web locations and I think they are incredible.

This may sound silly but I am not totally clear with the term Web server in respect to Sesame. Could you explain when you say Web server what exactly that is?

Is this using a Sesame application over the internet, having my db & dat files on a machine (Server) connected to the web and the Sesame.exe file on the users machine? or is it feeding data from a Sesame application to a website to use?

Either way I can not wait till Friday’s session, I have learned so much from each one you have given!

Thanks

Sesame has a built-in web server which can serve web pages. These pages can, through inclusion of special tags, include data drawn from a Sesame database.

In preparation for the meeting, I went through the Web Capabilities tutorial in the User Guide. Everything works fine until I try to access index.html from a remote browser (my neighbors). I enter http://ServerName/Site/index.html and get the "site cannot be found message".
Of course, when I do this on my own local computer, it works, and I can submit requests and get data from Customers.db. I missing something...

Is your machine behind a firewall and so you can't reach it from the outside world? Most internet router/gateways have a built in firewall. Also, most internet router/gateways have a DMZ port, allowing a machine to be placed on the internet side of the firewall.

Well, I have disabled mu Windows firewall, and disabled my linksys router setting "Block Anonymous Internet Requests", but still no luck.

It still may not be able to resolve the name of your server to locate where the request is meant to go. And so on and so on... Exposing a box to the internet requires a bit of setup.

You will need to 'forward' port 80 in your router to point to the internal IP of the machine you are running Sesame on.

Even if all of the firewall settings are disabled, most "internet routers" act as gateways, using address translation. To the outside world all of the computers on your network look like a single IP external address (usually assigned by your ISP). On your side of the gateway each of computers has an artificial local IP address (usually in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x ranges). To overcome this, you must either place your computer in the gateway's DMZ and get it a unique IP address, or use software like Hamachi that can "tunnel" through the gateway and assign a proxy for your computer out on the internet.

Or, your could get a web server that is actually out on the internet all the time. Some companies provide "virtual servers" and allow a great deal of freedom concerning what you run on them.

If you use Port Forwarding, you should assign a static IP to the hosting machine.
