Derived columns

I am having trouble with a report using derived columns. There are 3 LE's in the report 1 text and 2 number. I defined a third number variable unbound and in on print for that LE I set that LE = LE1 - LE2. (the 2 number LE's)
Received message that some or all did not compile. The report ran displaying the 1st 3 LE's.
Without the defined LE the report ran without the compile message.
I thought I followed the example from Inside Sesame that was published some time ago. January 2007.
What have I missed?

When you run Test in the Programming Editor, what does the error message say?

If the report gives a compile error when it runs, the Test Program should show an error in the bottom portion of the Programming Editor when you click the Test menu and choose Test Program.

The derived column is a number field. There were no error messages when test was run. The problem was one of the number fields had a space. The field name is On Hand and even though it prints OK it doesn't like arithmetic.
Thanks for the responses.
