I just got a new computer with Windows 7 and Sesame Designer is locking up frequently.  Am I in serious trouble?

Which version of Sesame do you have? Also, please post the contents of your "Sesame.ini" file. (It's normally located in the C:\Sesame2 folder.)

I run (and develop) Sesame on a Windows 7 box frequently. No problems seen.

Same here -- no problems under Win 7.

By any chance are your data files on a network, not the local machine?

Ditto!

Well, I don't develop Sesame, but I do develop Sesame applications on Windows 7. Smiley

Rick may be onto something, though.

It has to be something other than Sesame.
Like many others have said, I have Sesame Designer on Win7 with no problems.

Since you said it is a new machine, are you sure that components within the machine are not creating the problem? If the machine has a Diagnostic testing software (Many national brands like dell do) that may help you find any conflicts.

I've narrowed it down to it happening when I click on the Preview Application button.  I've attached the description of my computer.  Could the new Core i7 be a problem?

Very doubtfully.

I suspect that it has to do with configuration of your OS, not the OS itself. Look into security settings, anti-virus settings, firewall settings, network settings, etc.

If none of those are out of the ordinary, you might also consider running a few hardware diagnostics, especially on memory and hard drive.

Also, as Rick asked, are your files on the local machine or through the net?

Also (again), when you say it "locks up" can you be more specific? Do you see the preview window? Is it locked up also?

When SDesigner brings up the preview window, the SDesigner window is "locked" until the preview window goes away. Sometimes, WindowsOS is a bit willy-nilly about stacking order, and the preview window is obscured, causing the end user to see that the SDesigner window is locked, and since they don't see the preview window, they believe it is "locked up".

Not sure if it means anything but I have been running Sdesigner no problem with Core i7-2617m with no problem.

When I click on the Preview App button, the program starts to load the preview but locks up the computer before it makes it to the application.

Regarding the suggestions for diagnostics, virus protection settings, etc.  I'm going to need to get my IT people involved.  I'll let you know what they find.

It may the application files themselves.

1. Have you tried them on a different computer?
2. Are you client/server or standalone?
3. When you say that the "computer is locked up" do you mean that programs other than Sesame/SDesigner are also not responding?
4. Does your mouse move?
5. Have you looked at task manager to see if any process is using lots of CPU or network?
6. Are running SDesigner full screen?

When SDesigner goes to preview mode, it does reload the application file from disk to memory. But the preview window, and indeed the entire code for Sesame runtime, is embedded in SDesigner. So there is no second process to load and execute.

I've always run it on my computer, which is on a network but the .dsr file is on my local C: drive.

By 'locked up' i mean that SDesigner is locked up.  The mouse will move, the other programs continue to function fine.

I've looked at the task manager and the CPU hog is SDesigner.

I don't run SDesigner on full screen.

Do you have any code in the On Application Open event?

Does the application file (the .dsr) open in Sesame runtime? You can open .dsr files in runtime executable by specifying the filename on the command line:

c:\MyPath\ToSesame\sesame.exe MyApplication.dsr

Yes, there is some code in the On App Open event (below).

I don't know what you mean by "open in Sesame runtime".  I just click on the Preview button when i'm working in the .dsr file.

//Set any defaults and do any checks when the application opens

//Set the variables
Var vTree as INT
var vTreeStatus as Int
var n as int

// Turn on the appropriate menu.  Note that the Basic User has access to the Basic User Menu, the Administrators have access to the MASTER Menu and all else should go to the Presidents Menu.
// Add any new users to the FIRST ELSE statement below!!!

If @Group="Temporary"

     SetDefaultTab("Add Data basic user Menu")
}

Better yet, do you have anything in the "On Draw" event of a Startup Form (while also having something in the Global Code of that same form)?

Have you tried running it without that code?

I know that you are using preview. I am asking you to try running it in sesame.exe as opposed to sdesigner.exe as a test. Sesame.exe can open .dsr files if you specify the .dsr file on the command line.

Hi everyone!

It's my first time here and I've got also a problem with Windows 7. So I drag out this thread again.

My problem is, that Windows 7 usually don't allows to have personal data under c:\programme\sesame\data. They should be under my personal documents. Now Windows creates a "virtualstore" and saves all my data there. I already turned off the usage of the "virtualstore" and tryed to change the access privileges, but @xlookup and my lists won't work  Sad .
So is it possible to work with sesame 1.1.5 without having the data in c:\programme\sesame\data, or is there a another solution for this problem.
Thanks a lot for your help and I'm sorry for my poor English!

Best regards from Germany

Hello Dietrich,

The Sesame data files can be placed in any directory you want on your computer as long as Sesame has Read and Write permissions to them there. What you can do is create another directory on your system that is purely for the Sesame Data files, such as C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Sesame, Make sure that you as a user have Read and Write permissions to that folder.

Then in the c:\programme\sesame folder you will find a file named rootdirs.ini, open that file in notepad and add a new line to the beginning of the file that is that directory path, ex: "C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Sesame" without the quotes.

Then modify your XLookup programming so that the DB file path includes the full path to that directory, ex "C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Sesame\MyApplication.db"

Hello Ray,

thanks a lot for your help. I'll try that.

Otherwise this solution is very inconvenient, because I often use my data on different computers. Isn't there another data-directory in windows 7, which is equal on every pc and accepted by sesame?

Hello Dietrich,

You can create a data directory anywhere you would like on your systems and make it the same path on all the computers. It could be C:\MySesameFiles\ for example

By default Sesame installs into C:\Sesame2 directory so the default data directory would be C:\Sesame2\Data which would be unaffected by Window's Virtual Store functions.
