Missing .db file

All of a sudden, I have lost a .db file. The .dat file is still there. The most recent backup is a week old. Is there any way to get the .db file back?

Your best bet would be to try and discover what made the .db file go away.

As to its recovery, there are two possibilities, either it was moved/renamed or it was deleted. If it was moved or renamed, dig in and find where it is now. If it was deleted an undelete utility may be able to recover it - especially if you have done very little with that computer since.

Hello,

The DB and the DAT need to be of the same timeframe as they are a matched file pair, so unless you can find where the DB file ran off to, your option is to revert to your backup.

That's what I was afraid of. I was hoping that the db could be rebuilt somehow. I have no idea why or where it disappeared to. I guess Monday will be for re-entering a weeks worth of invoicing. Normally I wouldn't go that long without backing it up.
Thanks.

We have some facility here to extract the data from the .dat file. How complicated was your application? Is your latest .db using the exact same design as the .db file that you lost?

Mark,
The app isn't very complicated. We have the dat file, 7692 Kb, dated June 5, 3:18 pm. The latest db we have is dated May 29.
There has not been any design changes between them.

Does the application have any sub-forms / sub-records?

I will talk to Ray and the powers-that-be about recovery cost. I'm in development, not support.

Ray says that "focused support" costs $50 per half hour.

There is no way of knowing exactly how long it will take to extract the data from your .dat file and get it into shape to re-import into your design, probably between four and eight hours. It may be more cost effective to go with your backup from a week ago.

Thanks for your help, Mark. We're going to go with re-entering to the backup. I'm assured that "it won't take very long".  Roll Eyes

Until you discover what ate your file, make backups frequently.

Having the file simply disappear is very rare. We wrote the utility because people much more frequently accidentally overwrite the .db file with some other file - usually a word/excel document. That, or they overwrite it with an older .db file, thinking that that will revert their system to a previous state.

MagicFish,

Are you familiar with the server Ini setting BACKUP ON INTERVAL?

It is an auto back-up command that has saved my A$$ more than once. You set the interval and it does the rest. I have found that with BACKUP ON INTERVAL and a batch file that moves the backups to an external hard drive at night I sleep much better. Just something to think about.
